Hiking History

Growing up in Maine, I discovered the Appalachian Trail and was amazed that I could take a left and walk to Georgia on a continuous footpath.  While working in Connecticut, I began to hike the trail in sections to the north and south completing 900 miles. After retiring, and hiking 1,000 miles in 1998 , I finally finished the Trail in 1999.  This same year I thru-hiked the 480 mile Colorado Trail and made Telluride, Colorado my home base.

I was just getting started and thru-hiked the 2,750 mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2000.  In 2001 I returned to the east and thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail completing it a second time.  In 2002 I traveled to Australia and New Zealand for 6 months. I hiked the Overland Track and the wild South Coast Track in Tasmania, several hikes into the bush of mainland Australia.  New Zealand has many interesting hikes including the Heapy Track in the south and 90 mile Beach on the North Island.

I made a thru-hike attempt of the 3,000 mile Continental Divide Trail in 2003 completing 2800 miles and in 2004, I returned to where I left off on the trail and finished the remaining miles to achieve the Triple Crown of long distance hiking. In 2005, I completed the 800 mile Arizona Trail. I combined hiking and fundraising in 2007 by completing the 3,000 mile CDT again while raising over $17,000 for the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program.

I especially like hiking long trails a second time and it's my goal to complete the big three again becoming a double triple crown. I'm 2/3 of the way there!

There are many hikes here and around the world that await.
